Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is mental health therapy?

A: Mental health therapy, also known as counseling or psychotherapy, is a process where you talk with a trained professional, like a therapist or counselor, to explore and address your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and challenges in a safe and supportive environment.

Q: Who goes to therapy?

A: Our clients are regular people: your barista, friend, neighbor, teacher, waiter, and cousin! We provide support for anyone whose mental health is negatively impacting their jobs, relationships, sleep, and overall well-being. Our practice focuses on empowering our clients to learn about their symptoms with no labels or judgment.

Q: Why might I consider going to therapy?

A: People often seek therapy when it comes to dealing with common mental health symptoms that might be brushed off as just a part of life. These symptoms can include feelings of sadness, anxiety, or stress that stick around and affect your daily life; changes in how you sleep, eat, or have energy; feeling really down or like you're not worth much; having a hard time with relationships or handling your anger; doing the same unhealthy behaviors again and again (even when you know better!); or feeling like you're stuck and can't enjoy things like before. Therapy can help you understand and deal with these feelings, giving you tools and support to improve your mental well-being, even when life's challenges seem like they're just everyday life.

Q: How do I know if I need therapy?

A: If you're struggling with emotional distress, finding it hard to function in daily life, or if your thoughts and feelings are affecting your well-being, therapy might be beneficial. If you're unsure, reaching out to a therapist for an assessment can help you determine if therapy is right for you.

Q: What should I expect from my first therapy session?

A: In your first session, the therapist will likely ask you about your background, current challenges, and what you hope to achieve through therapy. It's also an opportunity for you to ask questions and get a sense of how comfortable you feel with the therapist.

Q: Does therapy even work?

A: When we say we are client-centered and goal-oriented that means that within our first to third session we will have created treatment plan that has goals that we will have developed together. A treatment plan has goals, objectives and appropriate interventions. You will know therapy is working if those goals are being met within the allotted time frame. It goes without saying that therapy can be hard work, if you do the work and trust the process, you will not be disappointed.

Q: What happens during a therapy session?

A: During a session, you'll talk about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The therapist may ask questions, offer insights, and provide strategies to help you better understand and manage your challenges. Sessions can be structured or more open, depending on the therapist's approach.

Q: Is therapy confidential?

A: Yes, therapy is typically confidential. Therapists are legally bound to keep your sessions private, unless there's a risk of harm to you or others. It's a safe space to share your thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment.

Q: Do I have to talk about my childhood?

A: No, you don't have to talk about your childhood in therapy if you're not comfortable doing so. While discussing childhood experiences can provide insight into certain patterns and behaviors, it's entirely up to you what you want to share during your therapy sessions. Therapists are here to support you in addressing your current challenges and goals. If you feel that discussing your childhood experiences is relevant to your current struggles, it might be worth exploring. You're in control of what you choose to share, and the pace at which you're comfortable doing so. The most important thing is that you feel respected and empowered during your therapy journey.

Q: What are your services and what are your fees?

A: Please refer to INSURANCE & FEES page.

Q: How long does therapy last?

A: This group practice is goal-oriented and client-centered which means we go at your pace. Traditionally therapy is once a week. But at Desert Insight we schedule sessions based on you and your needs - this could be once a week, every two weeks, once a month or on a as-needed-basis. Brief therapy ranges between 4 to 12 sessions.  Long term therapy can be years long, sometimes people see their therapist once a month or during life transitions.  It is all up to you.

Q: Will I need medication?

A: Psychotherapists are not licensed to prescribe medication but if you have symptoms that may benefit from medication, we will refer you back to your primary physician or a psychiatrist.

Q: Do you accept insurance?

A: We currently accept Kaiser, Cigna, IEHP and Medical.
