How to Find the Right Therapist in California: Why Feeling Understood in Spanglish Matters (Even in Telehealth)

Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming, especially if you have tried therapy before and it did not work. Many people walk away thinking, “Tal vez la terapia no es para mí,” when really it might have been the wrong timing, the wrong approach, or simply not the right fit.

At Desert Insight Family Therapy, we believe something very simple and very important: the relationship with your therapist matters. Whether you are looking for in person therapy or telehealth in California, feeling safe, understood, and seen is the foundation of real healing.

👉 Before you keep reading, we invite you to watch this short video where Carolina, the owner and founder of Desert Insight, talks about how to find the right therapist and why fit and timing matter so much.

Therapy Is Not One Size Fits All

There are many styles of therapy, but more important than the method is this question: Do you feel understood? Sometimes therapy does not work not because you failed, but because it was not the right match.

For many of us in the Hispanic and Latino community, culture shapes everything. Family, loyalty, responsibility, and aguantar are deeply rooted values. Setting boundaries with your abuelita is not the same as "Just" setting boundaries. And if you are the oldest daughter, you may have carried responsibility, emotional labor, and even intergenerational trauma for as long as you can remember.

A therapist who understands this will not just say “set boundaries” and move on. They will understand the guilt, the loyalty, the heaviness, and the cultural layers underneath it all.

At Desert Insight, we have therapists who speak English, Spanish, and Spanglish, and who understand what it means to live between cultures, “ni de aquí, ni de allá.” If you’d like to get to know our team and see who might be the best fit for you, you can meet our therapists here.

Telehealth in California That Meets You Where You Are

We offer telehealth therapy across California, so you can access support from wherever you feel most comfortable. Desde tu casa, tu carro, o tu oficina. What matters most is not where you are sitting. It is who you are sitting with.

So if you needed a sign here it is: It is okay to try again. If you tried therapy before and it did not work, it does not mean you failed. Sometimes it just means it was not the right fit, not the right time, or not the right approach.Trying again can be an act of courage.

At Desert Insight Family Therapy, we work with children, teens, adults, couples, and families. We currently accept Aetna, IEHP, Kaiser, Lyra, Cigna and Private Pay, and we offer services in English, Spanish, and Spanglish, both in person and through telehealth in California.

If something in you is saying, “Maybe it is time,” we are here when you are ready.
